Towards transparency and privacy in the online advertising business

Data Privacy – From Concept to Solution White Paper

A definition of privacy would be provided around the right of an individual or group to be protected against intrusion in their private life. This implies that a person can be selective in terms of what others should know about him/her and how public or private they want to be. The privacy rights at issue may differ depending upon context. For example, information privacy sets out how information about a person – their personal data – can be legitimately collected, combined and distributed.

Privacy is a fundamental right of every EU citizen. Using their personal data to track and profile them, without their knowledge or permission, should be avoided. Individuals, as data subjects, needmto be aware of how their Internet ‘digital footprint’ can be created, and the purposes for which their personal data may, or may not, be used. The EU General Data Protection Regulation expands this protection, by recognizing the right of individuals to control use of their personal data, even after those data have been disclosed to the public. The white paper provides methodologies and tools to ensure that these rights are respected.

This White Paper on Data Privacy is a joint effort among three EU-funded projects, namely, PrivacyFlag, TYPES, and OPERANDO. In the context of this White Paper, certain privacy-related issues are presented in conjunction with solutions as studied, designed, developed and tested within the context of the projects which have joined this effort. The contributing projects are briefly presented in the remaining of this section whilst the rest of this white paper is organized as follows: section 2 presents the specific privacy aspects which compose the joint scope of this effort; section 3 presents a set of frameworks and methodologies whilst in section 4 a set of tools are presented aiming at addressing the privacy issues which are presented in section 2.
